I still haven’t processed 2020, but here we are in 2023 ready to celebrate some wine days. Wine Holidays or Wine Days are a great way to try new wines throughout the year. It also helps take the guess work out of choosing what wine to drink. Mark your calendars and have your wine bottles ready. January Wine Holidays 2023

There wasn’t any wine holidays for January so I thought I would make one up! Introducing….

Champagne and French Fries Day is January 10, 2023

Twenty twenty-three will be the third year that Champagne and French Fries Day will be celebrated! Fellow sommelier and dear friend, Kleopatra Bright, and I, are obsessed with the perfect pairing that is Champagne and French fries. So much so that we thought it deserved its own holiday.

Since there’s still plenty of Champagne laying around after New Year’s, we thought early January would be the perfect time to honor this wine and food match! We waited until the 10th when most people have given up on their weight loss resolutions and are dying for some fries. Oh, it also happens to be my birthday. February Wine Holidays 2023

February has a few but some really great wine holidays. Try a new Hungarian wine, an old favorite- Syrah, open up a special bottle, or participate in Global Drink Wine day.

National Furmint Day is February 1, 2023

Have you ever had Furmint? You probably have without knowing. Furmint is the main grape of the famous Hungarian dessert wine Tokaj. Dry styles of Furmint are really cool, too. After a press trip to Hungary, I fell in love with the grape. This is a great opportunity to try something new. Furmint Day is always observed on February 1st. Wine Lover’s Day is February 14, 2023

Yes, yes, February 14th is Valentine’s Day but honestly, when has wine ever let you down? Can’t say that for former lovers, can you? The #winelover community has over 25,000 members worldwide! To celebrate the inception of their group they celebrate Wine Lover’s Day on the anniversary February 14th. Dually important on February 14th, is the name day of Saint Tryfon, the patron saint of winemakers and vineyards.

International Syrah Day is February 16, 2023

Mid-February is perfect timing to celebrate Syrah Day. This full-bodied, spicy grape will warm you up in the middle of winter (sorry southern hemisphere!). Global Drink Wine Day is February 18, 2023

I mean, shit, twist my arm. Pretty sure I’ve celebrated Global Drink Wine Day every year without knowing and Global Drink Wine Day 2023 will be no different. Global Drink Wine Day is always on February 18th. How about trying a wine you’ve never had before like this or this? The hashtag #globaldrinkwineday is used for this ”why the heck not?!” holiday.

Open That Bottle Night is February 25, 2023

Open That Bottle Night was created to encourage you to open up a bottle that you’ve been saving for a special occasion. This is your special occasion! This holiday was started by the Wall Street Journal in 2000. It’s always celebrated on the last Saturday of February. Use hashtag #openthatbottlenight.

March Wine Holidays 2023

There are only two wine holidays in March; Mulled Wine Day and Riesling’s Birthday.

Mulled Wine Day is March 3, 2023

Whether you call it mulled wine, glühwein, vin chaud, vino caliente, or glögg, you should be celebrating Mulled Wine Day in 2023. Please enjoy this mulled wine recipe I created especially for Mulled Wine Day. Mulled wine is essentially red wine served with fruit and spices. Please be warned, I became unexpectedly intoxicated making this mulled wine recipe. I did this for you, so it was worth the sacrifice. Mulled Wine Day is celebrated on March 3rd every year. Riesling Day is March 13, 2023

Riesling Day is a celebration of Riesling’s birthday. Apparently, Riesling is turning 588 years old in 2023. Looking good for a its age for sure. This white grape hails from Germany but is planted throughout the world. Not all Riesling is sweet. Grab a Trocken Riesling to try the best dry wine of Germany. April Wine Holidays 2023

Quite a few wine holidays in April 2023 so mark them on your calendar.

Tannat Day is April 14, 2023

Tannat is a bold red wine originally from France and famous for the tannic wines of Madiran. However, it’s Uruguay that has really made a splash with Tannat. Tannat Day 2023 commemorates the Father of Tannat in Uruguay, Pasqual Harriague. He was the first to plant Tannat in El Salto, Uruguay in 1870. Now it’s the most widely planted grape in this small but mighty South American country. April 14, 1894 marks the passing of Pasqual Harriague and Tannat Day honors his legacy on this day. Tannat Day is celebrated on April 14th every year. Use hashtag #tannatday on social media.

World Malbec Day is April 17, 2023

Malbec is native to France, but it is Argentina that made this grape famous to a whole new generation. Malbec is a red grape that makes bold wines. International Cava Day is April 23, 2023

Fall in love with Cava on International Cava Day 2023. Cava is sparkling wine made in Catalonia, Spain. Cava is made in the traditional method of sparkling wine from the grapes Macabeo, Xarel-lo, and Parellada. April 23rd is San Jordi day in Spain, a day with much tradition that surely entails lots of bubbly. Let the world know you’re celebrating International Cava Day with #cavaday.

World Marselan Day is April 27, 2023

Okay, I have to admit, I had no idea what Marselan was before I made this wine holiday list. Turns out it’s a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, what’s not to love about that! World Marselan Day is celebrated on April 27th every year to honor the creator of Marselan, Paul Truel who was born on April 27, 1924. Though created in France, Marselan has found its home in South America and is planted throughout the continent particularly Brazil. Celebrate World Marselan Day 2023 with hashtag #worldmarselanday.

International Viognier Day is April 28, 2023

This is the third year that International Viognier Day will be celebrated. It was started by a famous wine producer in Australia, Yalumba. Viognier is the white grape that triggers the most memory smells for me and is subsequently one of my favorite grapes. It’s spiritual home is the northern Rhone Valley in France but gorgeous expression are made in California, Australia, and the rest of the new world. International Viognier Day is celebrated on the last Friday of April every year so it’ll be on April 28, 2023. Use hashtag #internationalviognierday or simply #viognierday.

May Wine Holidays 2023

As the weather starts to warm up, you’ll be gravitating towards white wines again. The wine holidays in May 2023 celebrate three of the most famous white varieties- Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Moscato. Also, National Wine Day 2023 is celebrated towards the end of May.

International Sauvignon Blanc Day is May 5, 2023

Have I ever shared my secret to ordering from a wine list when you don’t recognize any of the producers? I always go for the Sauvignon Blanc because it’s really hard to mess it up. Anyway, that’s my unsolicited advice for the day. Drink Sauv Blanc on Sauvignon Blanc Day 2023. Sauvignon Blanc day is celebrated on the first Friday in May. In 2023 that falls on May 5th. World Moscato Day is May 9, 2023

Tell European producers that all Moscato is sweet wine and see their heads explode. While the sweet stuff is not my taste, always drink what you like, but may I encourage you to try a dry Moscato, or dry Muscat, on this day. If you love the sweet kind try Moscato d’Asti and spicy Mexican food for World Moscato Day 2023. Always celebrated on May 9th. Celebrate with hashtag #worldmoscatoday. National Wine Day is May 25, 2023

Another wine holiday in 2023 that you’ll likely be celebrating without realizing is National Wine Day. I haven’t missed a single National Wine Day in 16 years and don’t plan on missing National Wine Day 2023 either. No one knows when or how it started but do you even care? National Wine Day is always May 25th. Use hashtag #NationalWineDay.

International Chardonnay Day is May 25, 2023

Chardonnay is the most famous white grape in the world. Now, I know some people “hate Chardonnay” and honestly, I’m one of them. BUT it’s a certain type of Chardonnay that’s off-putting and it’s generally over-oaked and buttery Chards from New World wine regions, I’m looking at you California. Chardonnay is also the grape in white Burgundy and one of the grapes in Champagne. So, see? There are plenty of options to participate in International Chardonnay Day on May 25, 2023! It is celebrated on the Thursday before the USA’s Memorial Day at the end of May. This year both Chardonnay Day and National Wine Day fall on the same day. Good luck out there! June Wine Holidays 2023

The wine holidays of June include some of my favorite things like Chenin Blanc, bubbly, pink wine, and Lambrusco!

International Sommelier Day is June 3, 2023

On June 3, 1969 the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale was founded in the Champagne region of France. Since wine holidays became a thing, International Sommelier Day is celebrated on June 3rd to commemorate that day over 50 years ago. A sommelier is a wine steward whose focus is on service and all aspects of wine within a restaurant. Some parts about being a sommelier are glamorized, but most of the time somms are doing inventory, training staff, and updating wine lists. It’s an honorable profession that has evolved from stuffy butler-types to people from all upbringings and parts of the world. Use hashtag #internationalsommelierday.

National Bubbly Day is June 4, 2023

June starts off on the right foot with bubbles! There are probably about 10 wine holidays specific type of sparkling wine but National Bubbly Day on June 3, 2023 is dedicated to all of them! Grab your favorite Champagne, Prosecco, or Cremant and pop it on National Bubbly Day! Always celebrated on the first Saturday of June. In 2023, National Bubbly Day fall on June 3rd. World Verdejo Day is June 9, 2023

World Verdejo Day is celebrated on the second Friday of June every year. This year World Verdejo Day is June 9, 2023. Verdejo is a white grape found dominantly in the Rueda region of Spain. Spanish white wines of Verdejo are bright and crisp with citrus and melon characteristics. The wine holiday is perfectly situated to introduce you to your new favorite white wine for summertime. National Rosé Day is June 10, 2023

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, school is out for summer, time to drink rosé! Rosé is a great backyard sipper or even better with grilling chicken and veggies. Drink Chenin Blanc Day is June 17, 2023

Shuck some oysters and celebrate Drink Chenin Blanc Day 2023. That’s not a suggestion, it’s a demand. Croatian Wine Day is June 25, 2023

Finishing out the wine holidays of June is Croatian Wine Day. This wine holiday was founded by Anna M. Viducic, founder of Aroma Wine Co. There is a 120 indigenous Croatian grape varieties! June 25th is a great day to try at least one of them. This will be the 3rd year it is celebrated. Always on June 25th.

July Wine Holidays 2023

National Wine & Cheese Day is July 25, 2023

July has one wine holiday but it’s a good one- Wine and Cheese Day! Wine and cheese go together like love and marriage, like peanut butter and jelly, like bread and butter! August Wine Holidays 2023

There’s a few wine holidays in August that you shouldn’t miss. Starting strong with Albariño Day and finishing strong with Pinot Noir Day.

World Albarino Day is August 1, 2023

Apparently, they make a whole week of Albariño celebrations in Spain during the first week of August. Does that surprise anyone? No one parties like the Spaniards. Albariño is a crisp white wine mainly planted in Rias Biaxas. It’s pretty delicious and goes with lots of food. Definitely pick some up on World Albariño Day 2023. It’s always celebrated on August 1st. #worldalbarinoday

National White Wine Day is August 4, 2023

It’s summer and it’s a day, what are the chances you’re not unintentionally already celebrating National White Wine Day 2023? For me? Slim to none. Do you like dry or sweet wine? Prosecco Day 2023 celebrates the famous sparkling wine from Italy. I always, ALWAYS, have a bottle of Prosecco in my refrigerator. Prosecco is a staple on every brunch table. International Pinot Noir Day is August 18, 2023

Pinot Noir or GTFO! But seriously. Drink Pinot Noir. All day. Everyday. Pinot Noir is the main red grape of Burgundy, one of the grapes of Champagne, and lovingly made in many cooler climate wine regions like Oregon and Central Otago, NZ. Pinot Noir Day 2023 is August 18, 2023. August 18th is always designated for International Pinot Noir Day. #pinotnoirday

September Wine Holidays 2023

In 2023, our wine calendars start right at the jump with Cap Classique Day and Chianti Day sharing September 1st, and then Cabernet Day on the 7th.

Cap Classique Day is September 1, 2023

Cap Classique is the incredible sparkling wine from South Africa. In 2019, the Cap Classique Association started this wine holiday. The first bottle of MCC or Cap Classique was released in 1971. Cap Classique Day 2023 will be extra special since they weren’t able to fully celebrate the 50th anniversary last year because of the pandemic. Read more about it here. National Chianti Day is September 1, 2023

Grab some spaghetti or some pizza and celebrate National Chianti Day 2023! Or maybe some fava beans? Chianti is made in the Tuscany region of Italy. It is mainly made of the grape variety Sangiovese. Cabernet Day is September 7, 2023

Life is a Cabernet! Sorry guys, it’s hard to find interesting things to say for all 50 of these wine holidays, you’ll have to accept my corny ones too. Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely planted red grape on the planet. There are so many values found throughout the world. Try one from Chile, Australia, or South Africa. Cabernet Day 2023 is the first Thursday of September. It’s a perfect time to celebrate Cabernet Day because the weather is just starting to cool in the northern hemisphere. Grenache is such a fantastic grape. It’s best when blended with Syrah and Mourvedre in Rhone-style blends. You can find single varietal Grenache wines from parts of California, Garnacha in Spain, and even in Crete! The Grenache Association in France started Grenache Day to highlight this important grape. International Plavac Mali Day September 21, 2023

Have you ever had a Croatian wine? Plavac Mali is a great one to start with. It’s related to the Zinfandel grape. International Plavac Mali Day is a new wine holiday and one Croatian winemakers would love for you to try. Find more information here about the wine day. October Wine Holidays 2023

October seems to be the month for obscure wine varieties just trying to get some recognition. This is what wine holidays and variety days are all about! I wouldn’t know what Vranec, Prokupac, or Mavrud were without them!

World Vranec Day is October 5, 2023

Here’s an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with an emerging wine region. Though North Macedonia and Montenegro have been producing wines since it was ruled by Ancient Greece, the turmoil of the area has kept these worthy wines from the limelight. Vranec, or Vranac, makes a super delicious red wine. Give is a shot on World Vranec Day 2023. Always celebrated on October 5th. #worldvranecday

Orange Wine Day is October 6, 2023

Orange wine may seem trendy and new but orange wine has been around as long as wine has. No, orange wine is not made out of oranges. It refers to the amber color that occurs when you make white wine like red wine. Usually, the skins of white grapes are removed from the juice very early in the wine making process. For orange wines, there’s extended skin contact. It’s simple yet complicated, don’t worry about it, but try an orange wine on Orange Wine Day 2023. It’s always on October 6th. #OrangeWineDay

International Pinotage Day is October 14, 2023

Pinotage is a red grape that is famous in South Africa but rarely grown elsewhere. It’s a crossed variety, and if you remember anything from biology class, that means it’s a a combination of Pinot Noir and Cinsault. I’ve found that people either love or hate Pinotage. You won’t know until you try it. What better time than on International Pinotage Day 2023! The holiday is always celebrated on the 2nd Saturday of October. Prokupac Day is October 14, 2023

Have you ever had wine from Serbia? Me neither! Let’s make it a point to discover this grape together on Prokupac Day 2023, okay? Prokupac is the main grape of Serbia that has been around for centuries! Wine lovers in Serbia host events all week long to honor Prokupac and bring awareness to their prized grape. Wanna learn more? World Champagne Day is October 16, 2023

There’s a few Champagne Days floating around and I don’t see the harm in celebrating every single one. Champagne is more than a wine but a lifestyle (was that cheesy enough for you?). I love Champagne, I do. It’s an indulgence for me so I do try to celebrate this wine holiday. It just so happens to be my first-born’s birthday, the day I became a momma, too, so even more reason to celebrate! World Champagne Day is always celebrated on October 16th. International Mavrud Day is October 26, 2023

Mavrud is a grape found in eastern Europe specifically in Bulgaria. It is also found in Greece where it is called Mavroudi. The prefix MAV means black, which perfectly describes this dark red wine. The dates was chosen to coincide with the saint’s day of Saint Dimitrov which halts work for the day for fall celebrations. The first International Mavrud Day was in 2021, so be sure to celebrate International Mavrud Day in 2023. #mavrudday

International Carignan Day is October 29, 2023

Carignan is always playing second or third fiddle to the more famous grapes of Spain (where it’s call Carinena) and France that it’s blended with. I think it deserves its own day and its own recognition so I fully support Carignan Day 2023! Give Carignan some love every 29th of October. #CarignanDay

November Wine Holidays 2023

Hold on to your hats because there’s quite a few important wine holidays in November starting out with one of my personal favorite grapes, Xinomavro.

International Xinomavro Day is November 1, 2023

Xinomavro is the main grape of northern Greece. While it has been compared to Nebbiolo or even Pinot Noir, Xinomavro is really a wonder on its own. Winemakers in northern Greece bound together to start International Xinomavro Day to bring attention to this noble grape. Use this Greek food pairing guide to help you celebrate. It is always celebrated on November 1st. I am going to try to celebrate Xinomavro Day 2023 in Northern Greece, shall we make it a group field trip? International Merlot Day is November 7, 2023

Even though Merlot is one of the greatest grapes in the world, it never seems to get its dues. On International Merlot Day 2023, be sure to honor Merlot for playing a supporting role in the best wines in the world without grand-standing like its brother, Cab Sauv. Just sayin. International Tempranillo Day is November 9, 2023

International Tempranillo Day celebrates the best grape of Spain and Portugal. Though, you’ll find it by dozens of other names in the Iberian peninsula, Tempranillo best describes this early ripening red grape (temprano translates to early in Spanish). Lots of great regions to choose from so pick one you’ve never tried before. Here’s a list of food pairings to help you celebrate Tempranillo Day 2023. Wine Tourism Day is November 12, 2023

Wine Tourism Day 2023 is a the perfect day to visit a winery. Many wineries around the world have “open doors” meaning that even if they don’t have a dedicated tasting room, they open up their cellar doors and invite wine lovers in. Wine Tourism Day is always celebrated on November 12th though some regions choose to open their doors on the closest weekend to the date. Use hashtag #winetourismday

National Zinfandel Day is November 15, 2023

Zinfandel is one of the greatest wines from California though its origins are likely Croatian. An organization of Zin growers and producers joined together to start this wine holiday to give Zinfandel its due. National Zinfandel Day is celebrated on the 3rd Wednesday of November. Zinfandel Day 2023 is November 15th. Use hashtag #zinfandelday

Beaujolais Nouveau Day is November 16, 2023

“Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!” Beaujolais Nouveau Day might be the original wine holiday. Beaujolais Nouveau Day celebrates the release of the first wine from the vintage. There’s a mad dash to get all the wines to the market on the same day all around the globe- a supply chain miracle. For Beaujolais Nouveau Day 2023, I’m planning on being in France to witness the day firsthand, join me? Beaujolais Nouveau is always the third Thursday of November. If you’ve been following this blog for more than 2 minutes, you know I’m a huge fan of Carmenere. If you haven’t tried Carmenere, Carmenere Day 2023 is your chance. The holiday started to mark the anniversary of the recognition of Carmenere in Chile. World Carmenere Day is always celebrated on November 24.

December Wine Holidays 2023

The wine holidays in December are few because there’s already so many holidays happening. That doesn’t make these wine holidays any less fun!

International Maratheftiko Day is December 1, 2023

Maratheftiko, Maratheftiko, Maratheftiko! Say that 3 times fast, I dare you. Maratheftiko is red grape from the island of Cyprus. If you think that’s hard to say, it’s also known as Vamvakada, Vamvakina, Pampakia, Mavrosportiko and Aloupostafylo. You must try a bottle of this great Cypriot wine. It’s an ancient grape that’s quite quirky. 2021 was the first year International Maratheftiko Day was celebrated. Be sure to grab a bottle for 2023. #maratheftikoday. Cabernet Franc Day is December 4, 2023

Cabernet Franc is the proud poppa of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Carmenere, yet few people have heard of it. Discover this underrated grape on Cabernet Franc Day 2023, celebrated every year on December 4th. May I suggest a Cabernet Franc from Villany, Hungary? World Aszú Day is December 10, 2023

Tokaj Aszú is pure decadence. It is the most prized wine of Hungary. Aszú is made from Furmint grapes that have been infected with botrytis, or noble rot. I promise this is a good thing. This naturally sweetens the grapes and makes these outstanding wines. Do yourself a favor and grab a bottle every December 10th when World Aszú Day is celebrated. #aszúday

Pinot Meunier Day is December 16, 2023

Pinot Meunier is the unsung hero of Champagne, always overshadowed by Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Pinot Meunier is also grown in Germany and even Sweden! Well now Pinot Meunier has its own wine holiday on December 16th…it’s somehow associated with bitcoin which makes me cringe a bit, but hey, a wine holiday is a wine holiday. Sangria Day is December 20, 2023

Sangria Day is a great way to end the year. It is an easy to make cocktail with endless variations. You can make traditional red wine sangria, white wine sangria, or even sparkling sangria!
