A Few Tips when Pairing Snacks with White Wine

Look, you can’t really screw this up. White wine goes with a huge range of nibbles from vegetable snacks to nutty snacks to crunchy ones. Most of the time whatever snacks you have in your cupboard will pair with whatever white wine you have in your fridge. This guide is meant to inspire more than to set strict rules about what wines pair with each snack food. Here’s a bonus tip: any white wine you’ve got is just perfect with cheese and crackers.

Avocado Toast Paired with Chenin Blanc

One of the best snacks to pair with Chenin Blanc is avocado toast. The crunchy and nutty notes of smashed avocado make an excellent match with white wine.

Just add some pepper and lemon on top to give that extra flavor plane avocado is missing. It will come in harmony with the high acidity of Chenin Blanc. And your palate will be thanking you.

Cucumber Slices with Ranch Paired with Vinho Verde

Cucumbers are super light, basically water- Vinho Verde is super light, basically water. Talk about a perfect snack and wine pairing. Vihno Verde hails from Portugal. It’s very light, very tart, and a tiny bit effervescent. This is also a great to serve before a meal. The wine will get your palate prepped and the cucumbers won’t feel you up too much.

Hummus and Carrots: A Great Snack to Pair with Rhone White Wines

Have you ever tried this pairing? If you have tried it, you know what an excellent match it is. If not, head to your fridge or even to the grocery store and wine shop if needed.

And if you make your own hummus, then you are in even better hands. That snack pairs great with Rhone whites, such as Marsanne and Roussanne, thanks to their intense aromas and smooth texture. These wines tend to be a bit earthy just like carrots. It’s a great combo.

Tortilla Chips and Salsa Are Great with Sauvignon Blanc

This is a great snack and white wine combo. Firstly, tortilla chips are salty so they need to be paired with a wine with good acidity. Cue Sauvignon Blanc. Next, salsa has a lime juice in it, doesn’t it? Well what is the main characteristic of Sauvignon Blanc? That’s right, lime. This might be my favorite snack with white wine.

Olives & Nuts Paired with Albariño

Olives and nuts are my favorite mindless snacking snack food. Olives have that salty brine that I often get from wine made near the sea like Albariño. Nuts, yup, also salty. The Albariño also works as a palate cleanser between bites.

The different texture may feel contradicting or strange at first, but wait until you get that first sip of wine. Everything will come in perfect harmony, especially if you accompany it with a light-bodied wine like Albarino.

Champagne and Potato Chips

I created an entire wine holiday around the concept of potatoes and sparkling wine. Trust me it’s perfection. You will love the combination of the wine bubbles with the crunchy texture of the potato chips. Potato chips are greasy and the high acid of Champagne washes it all away. Salty food also need acid… and the crunch with the bubbles is such a good textural element.

Apart from Champagne, make sure to also try Prosecco with chips. For a better result, choose the drier version of Prosecco that pairs better with the saltiness of chips. More Prosecco food pairing tips found here.

Zucchini Parmesan Chips Paired with Vidiano

Do you feel like trying a different kind of chips with a different kind of wine? Or are you open to new suggestions? Either way, you will love how zucchini-parmesan chips pair with white wine from Crete, Vidiano.

These chips’ crunchy and crispy notes go great with medium-bodied wines such as Vidiano. I’m partial to this pairing because zucchini grows abundantly here in Crete in the summer and Vidiano is such a good summer wine. And if you factor in the fruity and natural aromas of Vidiano, you know you can never go wrong with this combination.

Popcorn with Chardonnay

As a wine lover, I am sure you have tried popcorn with wine more than once. And for a good reason! Popcorn is easy to make, tasty, and plenty enough to keep your hands occupied when that glass of wine is on the table.

Chardonnay, especially from New World regions like Australia and California will likely have a butter flavor from a process called malolactic fermentation. No need to worry yourself with what that is, but let’s just say the byproduct of the process gives Chardonnay a buttery aroma and flavor. Well, if you’re like me, you drown your popcorn in butter- are you starting to see why this is a perfect snack with white wine pairing?

Seaweed Snacks or Kale Chips with Pinot Grigio

I recently discovered this snack and white wine pairing at a friends house who is a bit of a health nut. The pairing actually worked great. The snacks are quite light and and so is Pinot Grigio. The Pinot Grigio was also crisp and picked up on some of the green characters in the snacks.

Kale chips and Pinot Grigio might just turn into my go-to when looking for a healthy snack and wine combination.

Edamame Paired with Riesling

Edamame beans are another excellent snack to accompany your white wine. Don’t confuse them with the regular soybeans. They are whole immature soybeans that are greener in color.

Edamame’s buttery and nutty flavors make an excellent fit with light-bodied and fruity whites, such as Riesling. Once you try them together, you will feel the aromas and tastes of both wine and edamame blend perfectly in your palate.

Crudité with Greek Yogurt Paired with White Bordeaux

This is a snack I have nearly every day. Depending on what time of day, I will pour myself a big ole glass of Gruner Veltliner, a grape grown mainly in Austria. Raw veggies goes great with that bit of herbal and white pepper character you get in these wines. Greek yogurt is also thick and creamy so a wine with a bit of acid is a great match.

Jalapeno Poppers paired with Moscato

I love love love jalapeño poppers. I obviously don’t make them from scratch but get the frozen kind. Super quick snack…but not too quick. How many times have you destroyed the roof of your mouth biting in to a jalapeño popper? Ugh, not good memories. ANYWAY. Poppers are spicy so therefore need to be paired with a wine with some sweetness to temper down the heat. Moscato is a perfect option. It’s sweetness will calm the spice and quite frankly, Moscato is delicious.

Deviled Eggs with Pinot Gris

For an easy-to-cook and tasty snack with white wine, give Deviled Eggs a try. Don’t worry; there is nothing devil-like in that snack. It is just a perfect mix of mayonnaise, mustard, and -you guessed it- eggs. This a great combo for brunch as well.

Although deviled eggs can pair well with various types of whites, Pinot Gris would be a match you would love.

Wine Pairing with Nachos: White Bordeaux

So this isn’t such a big difference in pairing from chips and salsa paired with Sauvignon Blanc. Nachos are just extra loaded tortilla chips, right? And white wines from Bordeaux are blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The Bordeaux blanc also pairs great with the cheese, olives, and guacamole of nachos though. God, this snacks with white wines post is making me hungry and thirsty. Almost done!

Melon and Prosciutto with Viognier

And finally, one of my favorite food combinations is sweet cantaloupe or melon with a slice of prosciutto draped on top. Such a good flavor combo. Melon and prosciutto pair great with each other, just as they do with white wine. Pick an aromatic and fruit forward white wine like Viognier, the final combination will leave you wondering why you did not try it earlier.
